News Governor’s Office of Elderly Affairs Awarded Over $1.2 Million in Recovery Act Funding

Today, the Governor's Office of Elderly Affairs announced that it will receive over $1.2 million in Recovery Act Funding for elderly nutrition services. Congregate nutrition programs statewide will receive $861,168 and Meals on Wheels, a home-delivered nutrition program, will receive $423,960. The $1,285,128 in total funding received will be used to expand or maintain meal programs across the state and will be allocated to 36 Area Agencies on Aging.

Executive Director of the Governor's Office of Elderly Affairs Dr. Jay Bulot said, "It is critical that we encourage a healthy lifestyle throughout Louisiana and these funds will help to ensure that affordable and nutritious meals are available to our seniors."

Funding totaling $861,168 will support congregate nutrition programs at meal sites established by local Area Agencies on Aging statewide. Seniors 60 years of age and older, along with their spouses, can enjoy hot lunch and a variety of recreational activities at senior centers or other community sites. Meals offer 1/3 of the daily nutritional requirement for seniors and the menu varies seasonally, with special meals being prepared for holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. While meals are provided free of charge, a minimal donation is suggested.

The remaining $423,960 will support the Meals on Wheels Program (also known as home delivered meals program) throughout Louisiana. Meals on Wheels delivers wholesome meals to homebound seniors which helps promote self-sufficiency and prevents premature institutionalization of the elderly.

The Governor's Office of Elderly Affairs serves as a focal point for Louisiana's senior citizens and administers a broad range of home and community based services through a network of Area Agencies on Aging. Area Agency on Aging is an agency designated by the State agency on aging to develop and administer the area plan for a comprehensive and coordinated system of services for older persons in a planning and service area.
